I would say that it's pretty safe to scoop up most beetles with your bare hand. I try to never close my hand on one (unless it's something I KNOW is wimpy like a ladybug or weevil)...I learned the hard way grabbing a praying mantis (true, not a beetle, but still) that sometimes they "grab" back, ouch! If you see one poking around a leaf or the ground and let it walk onto your hand, that's for sure no biggie. Smaller beetles...no biggies, even if they nip it won't hurt. Any beetle I'm not sure about, or really big ones, I grab on its sides, behind the head...kind of in the same place you would a crayfish if that makes sense...
