Tough situation for sure.
If you get him back, maybe then you can contact a rescue group to assist you. Again, age may be the deciding factor for a rescue and if they wish to embark on this.
You know, we all make mistakes and we all (hopefully) learn from them. I would not beat yourself up over this as I don't know of one person that can honestly say that everything they have done (regarding animals) was the right thing to do from the get -go.
You have an opportunity however to right a wrong. Get the dog back and work you butt of to get him to the right organization that will help you.
