Is the spot he's licking in the middle, or off to one side?

My Minnie used to constantly have two bald spots (sometimes totally raw and bleeding). One was on her belly by her right hind leg. The other was basically the same spot just on the side. When we took her into the vet, he did the rub down thing to get a feel for her organs and mentioned that he couldn't find one of her kidneys (the one on the opposite side of the bald spots). He thought either the kidney had never developed properly, or just wasn't there. He didn't seem to be too worried about it and we just kept an eye on her for the remainder of her life (another 12 years).

What we think was causing her to lick that area was the one functioning kidney working overtime to make up for the other one. If you've ever had a kidney infection, they are pretty painful. When cats are in pain or itchy, they are going to lick the area. I suggest having the vet take a look at whatever organ is right behind the skin where the bald patches are. Just to be on the safe side.

It probably is just stress... but better safe than sorry.
