Think a Vet visit is in order. You are right not to scold him, poor boy, he can't help it. Please see your Vet soon.
When my 12 year old had fecal incontinence we already knew she had invertebral disk disease and spinal spondylosis. We are not sure if it was the neurological damage or the pain meds that caused her to be unable to sense when a poop was imminent. This was a fact of the rest of her life and no changing it. What did help was to bulk up her food so she could better feel a bowel movement coming on. Higher fibre food and Immodium helped in this regard. Just some ideas to consider, I certainly am not presuming to diagnose or treat your dog over the internet. Please ask your Vet.
