What was the shot (Convenia, I presume) and what is the special diet? What was your kitty eating before? Has he had any other health problems? Staph infections are largely a result of a weakened immune system, so the best way to prevent further recurrences is to keep your cat in peak health - by feeding a high quality, species-appropriate diet (ie no kibble), keeping stress levels low, minimizing or eliminating vaccinations, getting regular exercise, and using supplements if necessary.
