One of the safest products to use would be something like olive oil and you may even have some on hand in your kitchen. Yes, cotton balls are good. The reason not to use cotton swabs is the ear could easily be damaged.

By the way, there is no danger of ear mites being spread to humans. I believe you asked about that in an earlier post.
