Good article! But in my experience, cats are intrigued by any closed door . . .

I take my cats out on harness and leash only. I do think people should do that if they can. There's always a risk of a cat escaping and although you hope that you'll find a lost cat before it runs in to danger, a cat to whom the outdoors are completely alien is more likely to make a bad decision, like not climbing a tree to escape danger because the rustling leaves scare him. When I first started taking my munchkins outside, they were scared of everything but now they're calm and they do enjoy sniffing sticks and rolling on concrete. (Oh, they looove concrete. ) Also, they associate their harnesses with going out and look for them instead of trying to get out the door by themselves.
