We used to 'trade' with Tommy to teach him to leave things... find an irresistible treat or toy and give it to him the instant he drops the item you don't want him to have (even if he just drops it for a second to get a better grip, LOL). It worked for us because he learned that he got something super fantastic every time we asked him to leave something else alone.
