We had a setter that used to get staph infections on his feet and belly from getting poked by the grass in the yard. He got it a few times in the first year, then evidently his immune system improved and he stopped getting infections. So there's hope yet! Winter will help if he seems to be picking it up from the grass--and with luck his immune system will be strong enough by spring that he won't have any more troubles.

What are you feeding him? A high-quality food may help strengthen his immune system. If you check out the food forums here you'll find some good alternatives.

And welcome to the board! If you have any pics of your pup we'd love to see them!
