Bubble wrap the tail. But seriously, just keep stuff high so he doesn't break stuff, and I agree with Longblades, in time he'll learn to control himself a bit more. Be happy that he is happy and remember that your dog wags his tail with his heart. Having just lost our old lab, I know their tails are very hard if you get whacked!
