Health Canada has once again expanded a recall

Health Canada has once again expanded a recall of dry dog food because of fears it may be contaminated with salmonella.

More than half a million bags of dog food and pet treats are affected, sold nationwide under the brand names

Innova, EVO, California Natural, HealthWise, Karma and Mother Nature. They all bear an expiration date prior to June 10, 2014.

Neither Health Canada nor the manufacturer, Nebraska-based Natura, have received reports of illness, the agency said.

Dogs and cats can carry salmonella and people can get infected if they handle their pet's food or feces, Health Canada says.

Salmonella poisoning can cause diarrhea, fever, cramps, nausea, vomiting, chills and headaches. Pregnant women, children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems could develop serious complications. In a small number of cases, it can be fatal.

A detailed list of the products can be found at naturapet.com/recall.
