My Red Hot Pokers are in part shade and they are thriving! Another excellent plant for hummers is the Red Currant - if you can grow it where you are. Here, it blooms about 2 days before the hummers arrive so as soon as it blooms, out come the feeders! It is actually a tree - a bushy tree and I think it gets to around 8 or 12' and quite wide too. I had one in my front yard and had to move it to the back because it was getting too big. I do believe the Red Hot Pokers prefer acid soil too - and my whole yard is acid..
