Cats can be taught to stay off counters, but it's hard repetitive work, and don't foget they are smart so they may try to find a way around it. Jasmine we taught to stay off the counters, whenever we saw her on a counter we would give a firm no and take her off and place her on the floor. She never gets on a counter when anyone is around, but if you get up in the middle of the night to get something like a drink you can sometimes catch her up on the bar or table. We correct her then too, but how often can you really catch her doing that at night. but at least she isn't eating our cereal. It takes time and patients but it can be done.
