Free-feeding unlimited amounts, yes. Leaving a specific and appropriate amount to be consumed at a pace the cat finds comfortable, no.

Except that a cat's metabolism is designed to take in many small (ie mouse/bird/lizard/insect sized) meals throughout the day. It doesn't down-regulate the way a dog's or human's does.
