Thanks everyone for your replies. I don't use plastic for our pet dishes. Cats get china dishes like we use except a different colour,
dog uses stainless steel dishes.

I have an old dishwasher..what is the sanatize function? Is that when u turn on the heat to dry them?

Seriously, though--I do wash all the dishes together, even if the dogs are sick, and we haven't caught anything.
