Federal Workers Holiday

Being a Federal Employee located in the states I can state with some accuracy that since the 4th falls on a Sunday we get Monday off.
A little known fact is that most federal employees are covered by negotiated union contracts (whether they pay any union dues or not) which gives them very good benefits, including holidays. Also the leave accumulation policy is not that bad either. While the leave accumulation is based on years of service once you get 15 years in the system you accumulate 8 hours of annual leave and 6 hours of sick leave for every 80 hours you work.
For those of us who do not take long vacation trips each year the accumulation of annual leave can become something of a problem since we can only accumulate 240 hours then it goes into "use or lose" status which means if you don't use it -- you lose it -- each year. So most of us "old timers who don't travel much" take a Thursday & Friday off when Monday is a holiday and get a 5 day weekend. Some of us also are able to work 4 - 10 hour days so those folks can work 3 days a week and take the 4th day off using annual leave accumulated.
This is most likley more than anyone wanted to know about stateside federal workers and their time off for the 4th..Smile.
Woody.
