By The Canadian Press
Thursday, February 20, 2003

MONTAGUE, P.E.I. - A Prince Edward Island woman has died in a house fire, after going back into her burning home to try to save her cats.

Firefighters say Adele MacPherson, of Montague, awoke Wednesday morning to find her bungalow in flames.

She helped her 89-year-old mother get out of the house.

Then she went back in to save her pets.

Emergency personnel say MacPherson was found next to one of her cats in the home.

The unofficial cause of death has been listed as smoke inhalation.

An active person in her community, MacPherson served on numerous volunteer boards.

She was currently working part-time at a local legal firm.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
