Unhappy RIP Rusty, my love.

Rusty came to me in 2001, after a tough year that saw her come to a shelter, given to someone else and then returned to the shelter. From the very first day, she was like a little glue cat, following me from room to room. I couldn't even get up and go to the bathroom when she was sleeping without her following me.

She saw me through a divorce, which resulted in her having to spend 3 months in a cat care facility (she understandably hated being kenneled so I don't imagine this was easy on her), adapted to new homes, put up with the addition of a pest of a kitten, accepted the addition of a dog, watched me go through a number of boyfriends - who she didn't approve of - and when she loved one, I married him. She was sweet and wonderful and accepting when my pregnant belly spelled the loss of my lap, and she accepted the new baby. She was brave when her friend Sierra got sick and passed away a little over a year ago and she was very brave through her recent diagnosis of hyperthyroidism.

Rusty was the kind of cat who never gave me any trouble. The biggest challenges we had with her was keeping all her claws trimmed (she was polydactyl) and keeping up with her ever-growing 'beard'. Her last day was spent in the company of her family, with frequent gentle hugs and her favorite treats: ham, bacon and cheez whiz.

Though her body was unable to keep her here anymore, her spirit will never leave. She has a well-deserved place in my heart forever, and a halo will soon grace her tattooed on my leg.

Enjoy the Rainbow Bridge Rusty. Let Sierra know she has not been forgotten and if you see Patchie, tell him I still miss him too.

Rest in peace, my love.

Melissa
