I found when I had my first got my dog, he as 8 months old and never been in a crate before. at first he would whin a bit. I can't remember where I read it, but is said but a blanket over the kennel if he is whining. it calms them down and makes it more like a cave/den. it worked, it did it for the first alittle while and gradually took it off. it may work for the whinning.
