Hair Clumping/Excessive

My cat is 14 years old. She is diabetic and requires an insulin injection daily. During the past few months, her hair is clumping up and eventually falls out or I have to pull it off. There is no sign of fleas, but alot of dandruff. Since she is old she does not groom herself like she use to.

I try to brush her, but the clumps are so massive the brush won't go through them. Some of the places are bald where the clumps have come off.

I know she could possibly have hyperthyroidism in addition to her diabetes. That could be treated with medicine.

Can any one tell me how to groom her. I am afraid if she is bathed and the hair removed, it would never grow back. Plus I don't want to traumatize her and make the condition worse.

HELP PLEASE!
