From your talking with the MEOW rescue, it would be the better place to adopt from as they take a real interest in knowing the pet, and would let you have a "try out". I'm sure they could suggest to you the best cat to fit your family, ie. one that is dog savvy is preferable. I do feel a male would be a better fit with your female, and also one that is not declawed. Good luck and let us know what you get.
