I am not sure Melinda. That is what I would like to know. I think this is one of those 'treat them like the pack would'. I honestly have never heard of this before.
To put your face near a dog that has questionable intentions (still not determined nor confirmed in this case), I would NEVER get up that close and personal. Years ago I had almost half my face bitten off saving a dog. Learnt my lesson big time and have still existing puncture marks to prove it. Not pretty.
