psw,I changed my 3 cats from Fancy Feast to Wellness,I buy the 12oz cans,feed them half in the morning half at night.
In buying a large can,it is really no more expensive than Fancy Feast.
Hope you can find it in Chicago,you have to go to a pet-supply store though,not super-market or Wal-Mart.
My one cat who has HyperThyroidism and is on meds,gained his weight back,except for the hips and backlegs,just like yours.
The vet thinks he is a bit arthritic..
