Colectomy and diarrhea in cats

Diarrhea with colectomy, either partial or total can take months to clear up. I presume that the iliocolic sphincter was preserved (ask your veterinarian if necessary).

The colon is required to absorb water from the gastrointestinal tract, but in post colectomy many cats will compensate in many cases. Treatment may require anti-diarrheal agents, low-fat diet, oral antibiotics, and/or bile salt-binding agents.

Discuss these treatments with your veterinarian.
