Puppy eats too fast

Hi,

I have a 13 week old large breed puppy who eats his food insanely fast.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or experience on how to get him to slow down while he eats?

Thanks :)

What kind of food are feeding your puppy , there are dog feeders that hold dried dog food and the food come out slowly .

:D we have the same problem with our young pup, he eats like its the end of the world! we bought him a "slow feeder" dish, its a weird looking bowl with three little obstacles inside... it only made a small difference for us, guero still thinks the food suply its going to end, but maybe you can try it and see if it works.

If you don't want to spend extra money on a new dish - I'd suggest either a cookie sheet where you spread out all the kibble in one layer or a muffin tin in which you fill up each cup with a bit of kibble.

Good luck!

Would it help to feed your puppy smaller meals through out the day? What breed is your puppy ,we have a photo addiction here and would loves to see your cute big puppy.

I have used the cookie sheet before, but I like the cup cake tin idea too. Normally in time they learn to slow down. You could also hand feed to make him learn to slow down.

Our cat uses this each day and it works for dogs as well.

Wow thanks for all the replies :)!

For the smaller meals more frequently we were thinking about it but I'm not sure we could be consistent with meal time in that case (our schedule varies a lot). Right now we feed him at 8 ish and at 4:30 ish because that's what works best for us to make sure he has some down time before and after meals (because we are worried about bloat).

For the actual ways to slow him down I really like the idea of using the muffin tin I never thought of that! I will give that a try tonight and see if it works out, if not we will try something else.

Thanks :)

And my dog is an Akbash (similar to great Pyrenees) x Black lab.

I actually posted some pictures of him in the pet photography forum a while back, he was a lot smaller then :P
