Shampoo for cats

I want to give Nino a bath! He's got very dry skin and oily at the same time. From what I've read being oily is a Maine Coon thing, guess makes them water repellant. I checked out some tips on a Maine Coon site but it involves using degreasing stuff etc. That's mainly for cats being shown and I don't really want to have to put him through all that! I had the vet take a skin scraping to check to make sure there's no cooties or infection and she checked and there's no creepy crawlies or sign of infection, which is good. I got him clipped last summer and he didn't seem to be as itchy but it's chilly now.

I just don't know what shampoo to get for him, there's so many types out there! The bathing part doesn't bother me, drying him might be a challenge cause he's got so much fur but I have lots of towels and the one site suggested putting them in the dryer to warm them up before drying which I thought was a nice touch. I wonder if those oatmeal shampoos really work for the itchies. Any suggestions as to brand or formula?

I use oatmeal shampoo, I just cant remember the name :wall: and since I am not home I can't go look.

But I can tell you that for my little guy, it has helped with his dandruff problem.:thumbs up

hmmm... never thought about warming up the towels for drying, thanks for the tip!

I was going to suggest an oatmeal shampoo also. I have to go get some for when the puppies come home. Love the warm towel idea. May try that at bedtime for the pups to make the crates a bit cozier.:thumbs up I used to do that with my son's pj's in the winter.

(Thread title was edited to make it easier to find in the future - hope that is cool)

Nobody has greasier, oilier cats than we do. They get a bath every single week because their hairless skin (they are Sphynxes) gets ultra-greasy.

We use a shampoo our vet recommended.
Virbac
Epi-Soothe
Shampoo for dogs, cats and horses.

I'll be honest though, when we have run out of it, on a few occasions we have used a bit of Dawn dishwashing liquid and never noticed any reactions. Our cat baci has bad skin just as an FYI. Seems lots of other people on the Net also use Dawn (hey they clean ducks with oil all over them in the commercials)....but I hesitate to recommend it (as it's a human product) when I feel the Virbac is superior and known to be safe.

Hope that may help

thanks Marko, ya the maine coon site also recommends dawn for degreasing them. I've used oatmeal bodywash on me for dry itchy skin and never noticed much change so I wonder how good iy rreally is
