boxer with open sores under eyes on snout

I have a 6 yr old boxer that has these open sores on his snout just under his eyes. I've tried to observe him to see if he was causing the wounds himself but I haven't see any behavior that would account for the gashes. It's been more than a week and they haven't healed, in fact I think they maybe worse. I tried putting some antibacterial lotion on the sores but it didn't seem to help. His eyes appear clear and although there has been some mucus in the corners of his eyes, it doesn't appear any different in appearance or amount since my discovery.

I'm truelly baffled and wondering if anyone has any idea what this might be and do I really need to take him to the vet?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the board!

If there are sores that won't heal or are getting worse, he does need to see a vet, petpapa. It doesn't sound so much like self-inflicted wounds so much as lesions. You'll need to find out exactly what you're dealing with before you can start to fix the problem.

So I think a vet visit is your best bet.

I agree with HRP a vet needs to see this. 2 things that come to mind as possibilities are insect bites or an allergy to something the dog is putting his snout into.....but a week is quite a time to be dealing with this and especially because it's not healing....a vet visit is best.
Good luck!

Let us know what the vet says, petpapa--I'm curious, too! Hope your boy is better soon!
