Rabies for cats
Does anybody know at what age kittens are given their rabies vaccines? I have to get one, however I rescued this kitty and was told that she had all her first shots. She was probably 6 months old. Is rabies given that young? I don't want to double dose her and make her ill. I tried to find the original owner but i am not able to. I could wait awhile and give it later on. She will not be going outside.
The conundrum: to vaccinate or not to vaccinate? Racoons and bats in Ontario can be infected with rabies so to be on the safe side, even tho your kitty will be an indoor kitty, you never know when a bat may get in a house, and cats will definitely go after one----it happened to me once when one came down our chimney. Indoor cats do get out occasionally---someone leaves a window open, a door ajar, and out goes the cat. Had this happen too. If you travel to the U.S. with a cat you will have to show proof of rabies vaccination---not sure if there's an expiration date. Your kitty could be vaccinated at 1 yr. but IMO doesn't need it yearly. Here's some info to help you make a decision:
Thank you catlover2. I am leary on vaccines but rabies is law, so I will follow procedure. I believe the rabies is not part of the kitty's regular "first shots". I didn't want to give her an overdose.
