kitten poopie problem

I posted it in gen. too b/c I need advice.

So, I'll condense it here.

3-4 wk old kitten.

Had an enema yesterday by vet b/c person who had it for 2 days fed it baby formula and had no b/m. Had one at 2 am after stimulating it.

Fed it 15 ml. combo pureed chicken and chicken veg. at 2 am

fed it 15 ml. evap milk(as rec. by vet) at 5 am and 8 am

fed it 15 ml KMR kitten formula at 11 am

Its' abdomen is swollen a little and it passed a little gas at 11 am and fell asleep on my chest. It's sleeping in a kittie carrier w/ a heating pad on low and lots of blankets over the pad.

Any ideas what else to do? It was found along the side of the road--next to its mother who had been struck and killed by a car.

I would recommend that the diet be heavily, if not exclusively KMR. Also make sure that the purees do not have any onion or garlic in them. While onion ingestion in healthy adults does not often lead to clinical signs, in small kittens it can be a big deal. Also using an eye dropper to help supplement with fresh water can help out. If the kitten is deteriorating, then a veterinarian visit for examination and possible antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids may be beneficial. If the kitten is having problems passing stool, then 1) keeping fresh water intake up and monitoring for dehydration can help along with 2) warm water baths can help relieve constipation. Just make sure the water is not too hot and that he does not get too cold afterwards. Hope that helps. :pawprint:

It was wonderful of you to save him. He is a lucky guy.:)

Thank you

I will feed exclusively KMS and give water supplements as well as warm water baths. The vet called me back and recommended minute doses of mineral oil or Karo syrup(which I hesitate b/c it is corn syrup and have heard sugar products are bad for animals). The chicken puree has no onion powder in it; however, the veg. chick did. I mixed it at a 3 to 1 ratio chick to veg. but will no longer use it.

We are the lucky ones to be blessed with such a sweet fur baby to care for.:angel2:

karo syrup is for quick sugar to avoid hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Alternatives are maple syrup or any other pancake syrup.:lightbulb: Maple syrup has the highest density of sugar of all pancake syrups.

Sounds like he is in good hands!:thumbs up

Did not poop today

The hole itself puckers but around it swells up and nothing is coming out. I'm a little concerned. The vet put that syringe pretty far up there. Did it maybe traumatize her bum?

I have never been so happy

To see kitty poop. Perfect kitty poop, not dry, not liquid--perfectly shaped and colored kitty poo.

Yay! I just saw this. I'm so glad he's at least pooped.

It's incredibly sad about his mommy, but thank goodness you were there to help him. Thank you for saving his life.

:highfive: Glad to hear the poop news! :D Sounds like your little one has had a rough start, but he's very lucky to have found you! We've got :fingerscr and 32 crossed :pawprint:s that he continues to thrive. :cat:

Pet people very often talk about poop...it was one of the first things we noticed when we adopted dogs--our dinner conversations began turning other people's appetites off!

:highfive: for the kitty poop!!! I can almost empatise with you but I had the opposite problem a week or so back. With 6 of them!
I am so glad this little darling has found you to look after him. He has a great chance now. Need I ask........ are you keeping him?
And btw - welcome and we like pics please. Especially of kittens and puppies.

thanks, guys

thanks for the replies. we're having problems weening him now, all he wants to drink is the bah-bah. we're keeping him, infact we got a little girl kitten who is two weeks older than him, but just a little smaller than he is, he needed a play mate because our cats aside from tinker, take NO INTEREST in him. so we're definitely keeping them.:D

That's wonderful you adopted a little playmate for him. You gave him a friend and saved another life!:thumbs up
