Our family wants to adopt a beagle. Everything we have researched tells us it would be a great dog for us. However, several people have mentioned that beagles really smell. As our pet would be in our home the majority of the time, it concerns us.
Would anyone know any information about this? We would be interested to hear from some beagle owners.
Found some ifo for you...
hope it helps
I've heard that beagles smell, is that true?
Beagles smell only if they're dirty. If you brush them once a week, feed them a nutritious brand of dogfood, and bathe them only when they need it, they should not smell. There is nothing inherently "smelly" about a beagle unless it has indulged in one of its favorite hobbies and rolled in something yucky. That usually requires an immediate bath, after which you will be entertained by the well-known "post-bath beagle frenzy" during which they run around the house as fast as they possibly can, pausing only to roll around on the floor in an attempt to dry themselves off.
BEAGLES DON'T SMELL
We have been more than happy beagle owners now for over 6 years....and our beagle does not smell....not even slightly. Several people in our neighbourhood also have beagles, and that is never a complaint ever issued when sharing stories of dog escapades. We live in the city and both work, so our beagle is within our house all day alone. Odour has never been an issue.
Beagles are excellent with children and are great household dogs. They can be a bit stubborn, and have selective listening skills, but are incredibly loveable. They do love their food though and tend to get a bit heavy....so good walks help.
Word of caution though. Beagles are incredibly nosey, and once they pick up a scent, they follow it and this is when the selective listening really does kick in. Always keep your beagle on a leash, as there have been several stories where a good scent has led to an untimely encounter with a car....or a skunk. Our dog got off its leash and was hit by a car within her first year, luckily, she survived and is leading a very healthy life. In her 4th year, we got the skunk, and all faired well also.
Without a doubt, if ever to get a second dog....the Beagle would be at the top of the list.
