Looking foa natural dogs mosquitoes repellent

Hi,
I am looking for a pet friendly mosquitoes repellent,to use on my dogs during the summer. Was wondering if anyone has used it beofre and can share with me the info.
Thanks.:)

mollywog June 19th, 2008 12:19 PM

yes! I had a similar question about a month ago so I went in to my local independent pet store. They suggested a spray called Muskoka Woods Bush Splash. I'm not sure what the ingredients are, but its entirely plant and food based, so it isn't harmful to your dog. You can even use it on yourself, and it doesn't stink at all. I live in bug country (Northewstern Ontario) and it works well here!!!

Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I will go check. Did you tried it on your dog? Do you by any chance have any info about the heartworm problem in Barrie? I did not do ,and have concerns to do, the heartworm vaccination, and am trying to get some more advices to help me getting into a decision.
Thanks.

mollywog June 19th, 2008 12:49 PM

yes, I tried it on my dog. It works great.
I haven't heard anything about the Heartworm problem in Barrie, since I live about 1600 kms from you! sorry! :pawprint:

Some people also like using Avon Skin So Soft. It works well for mosquitoes and I have not read any negative issues about its use in pets.

It is important to note that other than Revolution, no topical treatments for mosquitoes is considered enough to preclude the need for heartworm preventatives for heartworm endemic areas. :pawprint:

Skin so Soft has been tested and isn't that effective.

Where did you buy this Muskoka Woods stuff? Sounds awesome but I've never seen it around.

THanks!

mollywog June 22nd, 2008 03:27 PM

I bought it at my local pet store. Just call around to a few of your pet stores and see what they have, that's how I found it! :pawprint:

My old vet told me to get a spray bottle and put 1/4 tsp of citronella,1/4 tsp pure vinilla abstract and 1/4 tsp of tea tree oil and fill the bottle up with water shake and spray your dog.

If it does give cancer , why would it still be on the market ?

Check out Oil of Oreganol http://www.oreganopro.com/oreganolp73.asp - I believe they do all kinds - its not cheap but well worth it as you only need tiny amounts, it is harmless and natural.

And it works for minor toothaches...at least in humans.

It is a soy based product with lemon citron and edible oils. It is safe for young children as well. I've found it quite effective except during the height of black fly season.

I would caution others to read up on this product so that they use it correctly. If used improperly it can have very bad effects. This product was used undiluted on a dog I recently adopted. Her top layers of skin, including the fur is peeling off in 1 inch chunks on the sites where it was applied.

We use Bush Splash here on our dogs but I do find it leaves an oily film on thier coats, I have heard that a bounce sheet tied to the collar will keep the bugs away I know some ppl that do that with horses

Sabine June 25th, 2008 09:44 AM

I make my own:

Put 1 crushed organic lemon (peel and all), a few rosemary sprigs in a jar, add about a quart of hot (not boiling) water, let sit over night, strain into a spray bottle and voila. :) Must be kept in the refrigerator. Thoroughly spray pet and/or human before going out and it works. I also feed two teaspoons of garlic oil to the dogs every day and all we had this year was one tick. :thumbs up I peel a few fresh garlic cloves, remove the (toxic to dogs) green stem in the middle, let sit in canola or olive oil for a few days and off you go.

Who doesn't want to mess with this: Rio Vista sells a spray (PET-SO-SOFT BOTANICAL SPRAY) for dogs that's supposedly very effective. ;)

Hmmm......I think there's alot of products on the market that are suspected of causing cancer.

And, for the record, I use skin-so-soft on myself. :D But haven't used it on the dogs......thankfully, the mosquitoes are not that bad here. :o

Chaser June 25th, 2008 09:46 PM

I don't know any Avon reps so the Skin-so-Soft sounds like a pain to get. What stores is Bush Splash found at? I'm not too worried about oiliness since I would only need to use it once or twice a week on hikes...or when we go to visit relatives that live in the woods :D

14+kitties June 25th, 2008 09:53 PM

Skin So Soft works well around here too. The mosquitoes love it when I put it on!!!!!!! :frustrated:

rainbow June 25th, 2008 11:47 PM

 .....maybe they've become immune to it by now. :D

Toonces June 26th, 2008 02:56 AM

you can get bush splash from your vet and I think pet valu sells it, don't worry we have lots here so I can spray Chase up when he comes to visit:D

glitterless June 26th, 2008 04:26 AM

My neighbour was just telling me that she mixes vinegar and water and that it helps quite a bit.

Chaser June 26th, 2008 06:46 PM

Hooray! Found it at Pet Valu (needed to get some for hikes before we come see you Toonces :)
