Is too much protein harmful?

I'm not sure. I think that regardless of the protein source, good or bad, too much does make the kidneys and liver work harder. Can the kidneys and liver take it? Depends on the dog.

But for once (!!) this theory will be tested in humans in the long term- we just have to wait and see what the results of all this Atkins stuff is. I know in the short term, from the people I know who were on it, in the first year, their short term memory was really affected. But then again, my "sample size" was pretty small, right?:shrug:

after reading the article, i realized the issue of too much protein wasn't addressed :shrug: but still i really like that website & hope to see new updates to it often. i learned alot from there on kibble ingredients!

yah that atkins diet... scares me, to be honest. how on earth can eating so much meat be healthy for a human? plus the only fat populations are those where meat is easily accessible... and the populations who mostly have access to grains, fish and veggies & fruit are the slimmer ones. how can it be a coincidence...?

dogs & cats OTOH are different species but also too much protein (from an artificial diet such as grainless kibbles) has to be taxing on the system, specially the kidneys. i mean, they're just not built for that :shrug:

Well, I doubt there could be too much protein in a natural diet because it's not condensed and altered for marketing purposes.

I agree- they're not built for 42% protein by weight.

i confess dakotah is eating *some* evo... but not every day, and always mixed with a grainier kibble 50/50. and he more often than not finishes his meal by picking in maika's bowl, so that's natural meat n'stuff... but still after reading all of this, i'm pretty sure i won't buy another bag of Evo after this one is finished (only opened a few days ago, sigh - 28 lbs of the stuff!)

ps: i can't believe how much cheaper kibble is in the states :eek: I got 2 bags (different kinds) while i was in Boston a couple of weeks ago. Overall, even with the exchange rate, i saved a good $45!

As a supplement, it's ok. But as an only food, not so sure.

Out of curiosity, how much do you normally spend up there?

The DVP I used to feed is around $42 u.s for the largest bag.
The timberwolf I just ordered online is like $52 for the largest bag and free shipping anywhere in the u.s.

My Wolf King is $67+tax (total= $77) for 33lbs. (canadian)

Wow, that is a bit high.

considering our dollar went way up, yeah, it's unreasonable.

Let's see.... in Boston, i got a 28 lbs bag of EVO for $43 and a 16 lbs bag of Fromm's Duck & Sweet Potato for $24 (and that was not the cheapest petstore either). total tax on both bags was $3.

the SAME foods here cost $71 and $38, respectively, and add 15% tax :eek:

so even with the exchange rate of 1.16 that day, i saved a bundle!!

it's so unfair! :mad:

Read the info here I posted about protien, much of the general concept in thinking high protein is bad comes from an early 1900's study done on rats who are typically not meat eaters, not a study on dogs, newer testing in recent years has been done on dogs at 54% protien shows the protien is not harmful not even to dogs in early stage kidney disease.
