Nylabones vs. other chewies
 

I've heard mixed reviews about Nylabone products.....are they good for big dogs to chew? What about Rawhides??

Every article I read, or people I talk to, all have a different opinion!! So I thought I might as well get your opinions too!!

We bought Brick a rawhide, but he isn't really into it....he has a Kong (2 actually), a ham bone and a rope toy, and we just bought him some meaty marrow bones!

Any thoughts??

They can cause bloating and intestinal blockages requiring surgical removal.

The nylon bones or beef butcher bones!!

Only thing with the nylonbones. Take a steel file after a while and shave down the burrs. It won't cut the inside of the the mouth.

Raw hides big no no!

Thanks! Thats what I thought!! Good thing he doesn't really like his!!! I think he has plenty of toys for now anyways, so when its time for a new one, we will try the nylabone!! :D

Rawhide...I'm not sure if that would be too bad except:

Always supervise the dog when he's playing with it. Be RIGHT there.

Let the rawhide harden overnight after it getts mushy.

Inspect rawhide daily, and remove any pieces that might come off.

Get large bones that he can't destruct easily.


And last of all, if you can't do all these things, don't get him rawhide, because rawhide is dangorous.

Nylabones, Kongs, Cornstarch chews, Fresh or smoked bones and Jolly balls are all good toys. My dog loves his bones, and Cornstarch chews. The Nylabones are wonderful to. Some pet stores have lovely rubber knots that dogs love to chew, and other rubber toys. You'll find tones of things for your dog to chew.

My dog will not chew anything that is not food, and her powerful jaws make short work of edible Nylabones.(5 minutes!) I never give her rawhide for fear of her swallowing large chunks of it.

I do give a stuffed Kong ocassionally, but mainly I give her raw bones. They are the best, and she enjoys them immensely. I don't like the smoked bones because of all the chemicals, but I might give her one once a year!

I guess a rule of thumb, if your dog can shred & eat an indigestible toy, don't use those! I know thousands of dogs do fine with rawhides....mine wouldn't, because they eat them. Cooper had a scary choking incident with the knot off a rawhide when he was a puppy b/c he bit it off. :rolleyes:

Dear little Daphne the Destructo-Rott will reduce a large black Kong in about 30 minutes, so I really have to stick with real raw bones...well I do get the cow hooves occasionally. I'm sure they're not that good for the dogs, but I only get them once or twice a year. They'll eat nylabones too, then throw up the pieces.

I've bought some of the "indestructible" things like Galileo bones, but nobody's interested.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have smaller dogs with soft mouths instead of these three destructive brutes!

Brick picked out a bone at the petstore yesterday with my fiancee, not sure what it was, but he chewed it for hours. I got freaked out and took it away when there were little chunks of it on the floor.

I bought him a fresh meaty marrow bone from the butcher but Tim doesn't like the idea of giving him raw meat. I told him all about Carina's book and the raw food diet, but he still isn't convinced.

I guess we stick to chewy toys and no bones since we can't agree on a kind of bone to give him!! He is quite happy with his red Kong ball, and semi happy with his black Kong! I will try some of the recipes on that link, see if he likes them!!

Carina: a word of warning about the cow hooves. They can break up and the dog can eat them. I'm not sure how to explain it better than that, but I know just one thing; don't give cow hooves!

Spoiled...I know. :o I kind of feel like I'm crossing over to the Dark Side when I buy them....

Last winter I went one better though - I got them entire COW LEGS, feets & all. :D Raw. With fur. That was the same time I brought them entire cow heads too...shoulda done it this winter but didn't, and now it's warming up too much. Don't want those things lying about the yard unless it's seriously cold for weeks! :eek:

Brick is a really handsome guy!! Don't tell your b/f about entire cow legs & heads, he'll faint. :D

YES! The greyhound I fostered came with some stuffy toys that he had for 5 months! They were still in perfect shape when he moved on to his new home.

I must have been zoned out when I bought some ($$$) in anticipation of the arrival of my pit bull. She disembowled and shredded them in 2 minutes flat.

Now I buy her the squeaky stuffies at the dollar store and throw and tug with her for about 1/2 hour before letting her "kill" them.:p

LR - I DID tell him that, he's still freaked out about it - says its not sanitary!! So we'll compromise and not get any bones!! I thought about stuffed toys, but chose not to, cuz I'm sure he'd shred them all to hell too!! What a mess!!! :D

I guess it all depends on the dog!

My pups love these. They are only allowed them when we are in the same room. Usually when we want them calm long enough to watch a show.:D

the galileo bone, he enjoyed as a puppy but now he won't even go up and sniff it.

stick to the kongs and bone marrow, u can't go wrong :)

rope bones as well! and alternate,... yes, I do get the stuffed dollar store plush toys for them but, again, it's torn to shreds. I feel I should just give them an old towel to tear up instead.... they both look the same after about 5 min.

(I feel pigs' ears r too expensive for something that disappears in 10 seconds flat, they're also way too salty... get the 2-5lbs bag full of dry dog bone treats and fill up a Kong instead... don't forget to add a bit of PB!)

sardines from the can are also a JOY (& my are they stinky!) .77 cents from a grocery store? hey, it helps with their coats! :D

kinda looks like light wood and it's HEA-VY! It looks pretty cool when they're being "chewed." by that, I mean that all it has are scratches on the surface, I think it'd be Highly unlikely for a dog to be able to puncture it, much less to even break a piece off! oh, & be careful when the dog's playing with it, that thing FLIES & lands hard, as u can imagine... check it out @ the store & see what you think. :)
