Heat, Spayed

Hi friends,

I have two questions that might sound stupid, :sorry:

1)i was wondering how many times those a female dog get in heat? Once a month? And at what age does it normally start?

2)how old can a dog be to get Spayed/neutered (ex. someone buys a 3year old dog and want to get him spayed/neutered, is it to late? or there is no age) I know that its always better when young, but im curious :)

Don't worry no questions are dumb questions.

A female usually comes into heat every 6 months.

A dog can be spayed at any age. But they should be over 6 months old. They used to say to wait a year but its not necessary now, as with the new technologies vets do spay and neuters using laser instead of those big clunky tools.

Of course neutering and spaying are very responsible things to do.

Its never too late to get a male neutered or a female spayed, as they reach their golden years ( late in life) there could be more risk for complications but a 3 year old would not be a problem at all.

Most breeds do come into season twice a year, the first cycle can be anywhere from 5 months to a year in some dogs.
Where I live, it is cheaper to have the procedure done prior to their first heat cycle.

I myself wont do my guys until they are 2 years old ( I have many reasons and beliefs as to why but feel no need to publically post any reason to not have it done ASAP for the lurkers who stumble across these threads), I have a great set up though and the ability to make 100% certain that no accidental breedings will take place. We have 2 intact females and 2 intact males right now here and just breezed through breeding season with out a problem ( for us).
This does not mean that a novice or even your average pet owner could handle the hassle or realize how fast a breeding can take place or what lenghts a male will go to in order to get access to a female in heat.
Having intact animals is a whole different ball game when you do NOT want accidents happening. Spayed and neutered is the way to go by far.

Heat, Spayed

The heat lasts approx 3 weeks however your pup won't have to go through that or the pregnancy and delivery since you're a responsible owner who is going to get your pets spayed and neutered.
