The Computer Dummy Needs Help Again

I came very close to pulling the plug again today. :wall: :wall: :wall:

When I started the computer up today and went to sign into my yahoo account the keyboard kept posting some letters/numbers in capitals but the cap lock key was not on. :yell:

I immediately thought friggin spyware again :frustrated: but when I ran both my antivirus (PC Tools) and my firewall scanners (http://www.threatfire.com/ and also Ad Aware ....none of them found anything.

I also restarted my computer and then tried to download a different spyware program called Malwarebytes but couldn't get it to install as kept getting runtime error message about running out of memory.

I ended up going to Add/Delete Programs and getting rid of it.

We had to go into town so I put the computer into "hibernate mode" and when I started it up again everything seems okay ....at least it is typing properly but still seems to be "slow". :o

The "Trojan" I just got rid of was called Trojan QHost.T and my antivirus scanner said it quarantined and deleted it.

Rainbow, welcome back!
I had a major crash of all systems about Friday, the 13th..My computer was reset to June 6th, 2006 (or 666) and all my stuff was unaccessible...
From my personal experience, my husband's personal experience and my friends' personal experience, I recommend DM 100%! :thumbs up She is great!

Was the capital letters happening only in Yahoo or was it doing that on everything?

I purchase my internet security from TrendMicro has spyware/malware/firewall/network protection etc all in one package & I've never had any spyware issues :D

Hi Rainbow, Virus', spyware, trojans, etc. can all be rather insidious, sometimes they leave behind little buggy bits that will reinfect your computer later. This can mean that even though you scanned everything and it looked clean yesterday (or whenever in the past), that doesn't mean they are not back today, ESPECIALLY Trojan horses. Sometimes every time you connect to the internet you will get reinfected again, or sometimes only when you run a certain program, or type a certain key, and WHAM O, you are infected again.

One thing that might help you is not to use Internet Explorer, evil bugs love it! Firefox is a bit better. One of my computers is infected with something that only causes issue if I run IE, so I just stay away from it :thumbs up

I'm sorry it's not great news.... and my only suggestion for fixes is just to keep running every kind of security software you can find. I use AVG, they have a free version (www.AVG.com) but I upgraded to the paid one, just to get more features.

Good Luck!!!! :fingerscr

P.S. If you can get someone to scan your computer from outside your computer (either through www.symantec.com - though I think they offer it as a service with a fee now, or someone like DM, or a computer repair shop), you might have better luck killing your bug

absoluetly correct otter.

Alot of time these virus/trojans also remain in the boot sector of the computer.

& get reinfected again upon boot up.

I use avast! (I swear by it) also free. and 99% of the time when a clients PC is infected with a trojan I do put avast on it & run a boot scan and it has yet to let me down.

I wonder if the Sticky Keys are turned on?

Click the shift key 5 times, a dialogue box will come up asking if you want to turn on/off sticky keys make sure the "Turn On Sticky Keys" box is unchecked.

have you ever run Ccleaner? I use it every couple of days and keeps the computer nice and clean, only thing is you have ro put your passwords back in each time you run it....it gets rid of everything left over and clears cache etc...

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. :grouphug:

I haven't had any more weirdness so hope the problem is gone. I also fixed my startup problems by using msconfig. It seems that the Kodak EasyShare software was conflicting with PCTools AV so I unchecked it so it doesn't load anymore. So until something else goes wrong I'll just leave everything else alone. :D

DM, I did try TrendMicro Housecalls and the same problem as MalwareBytes .....will try them both again when I have more time. :o

Growler, the capital letters were happening with everything and it wasn't with every letter but it only lasted for a short time. And the sticky keys were not turned on. :D

Melinda, I use IE Privacy Keeper instead of CCleaner. :)

Otter, are all Trojans like that or just some of them? Do you know of a website that lists all the different Trojans and their threat levels? :o

rainbow,

It looks like a new version of your antivirus came out in feb is that the one your running?

Symantic threat resource virus/trojen list

That low or no memory warning (try disabling your antivirus etc before running it)

also try rebooting into safe mode & running antivirus/antispam programs that way.

Trojan Horses
The term Trojan horse or Trojan comes from Greek legend. In the world of computers, it refers to covert infiltration by malware or malicious software under the guise of a useful program.

After a Trojan is activated, it is often very difficult to discover the extent of the damage and generally identify the malware. The Trojan may change its original name and reactivate every time a PC is restarted.

In general, it's rare for a large number of files to be infected. Instead, the Trojan embeds itself directly in the computer's operating system. Depending on the motivation of the virus author, the malware contained in the Trojan may be designed to collect personal or financial data. trend's defination of a trojan
