Biting turtle
 

I have 2 red eared sliders, one female one male. I have them in a 55 gal tank. They eat just fine and have lots of room to swim and a couple areas to get out of the water. The male will flutter his front feet at the female and I know that is a mating thing. Recently tho, the male has been biting the female in the back under the shell and he just won't let go. Is this another mating thing? or is he being overly aggresive?

IF the male is becoming aggressive, it's probably because he wants to mate and she does not. How old are they?

If the female is not receptive to the male, you need to have another tank to put her or him into and let them try again another day. Otherwise, fighting and injuries may occur.

I'm not really sure how old they are, but if the websites and books I've read have any truth, then they have reach sexual maturity due to their size.
It's not so much that the male is aggressive, it's only been twice that he's bitten her, that I've seen at least, and it's not a bite and release. He bites, clamps down, and won't let go.
