Oral Antibiotics

My male cat has urinary tract problems and we have been prescribed liquid form antibiotics.

He hates the stuff. We're to give him 1.5 ml per dose via a syringe. He's a big cat and fights valiantly. I find that he is quite adept at forcing the medicine back up and spitting? it out.

Any tips?

A couple tricks I've used:

Raise his chin up after and blow softly in his nose. That may make him swallow.

also,
when his chin is raised up, scratch under his throat with your fingers until he swallows.

Have to confess - we're spoiled by Puss-Puss - she likes her pills, lets us know when it's time and all but opens her mouth for it. However, I just helped a friend pill his cat and OMG! That was a new experience!! :p

Can you try putting it in some food?

How about pills instead of liquid. I'm presuming it's Clavamox, which can taste quite bitter. I use the pill form with my boy, it's still a stuggle, but unless he bites down on the pill, the bitter taste should be limited.

I wouldn't put it on his food, incase he associates the bad taste with his food and then you can have problems getting him to eat. You don't want fatty liver syndrome.

I don't think you can put anything in the liquid for flavouring, as Clavamox suspension has to be refridgerated once constituted and adding "flavours" might effect it's "Best before" . Ask your vet though. If you can?, maybe chicken broth?
