Bump on Cocker Spaniel Back

My puppy is 3 mths old, and has a bump on its back, now there are three bumps, what could it be???

he has been sickly too, with diarrhoea & cough which have subsided, but the bumps are disturbing. Otherwise he is good natured, and a lovely little darling.

Please advise. The pet shop owner suggested that it could be blood clots. Could it be a reaction to the vaccination? the two new bumps came up after his last jab.

Cheers, please answer!

Did you get this puppy at a pet shop? I'm assuming the pet store owner is not a vet, so I advise you NOT to listen to what he says and to take your puppy to a vet and find out what is causing these bumps and to also find out about the coughing and diarrhea.

Puppies in petstores usually come from puppy mills and can be unhealthy since they are merely bred to make money and not for health.

i'm not sure what the bumps could be. is he from the pet shop? if so then he is probably a puppy mill puppy and that means it could be absolutly anything. what kind of dog is he? i know i always used to have Dobs and they tend to get binine (spelling) non cancerus tumers. but as far as the vomiting and diarhia you should take him to the vet. sometimes it will happen right after a shot but it's at least good to let the vet know cuz it could be an allergic reaction. if the shots were a while ago he is sick and needs a vet.

English Cocker Spaniel

Thanks Jackie467 & Lucky Rescue for your replies! :)

My pup is an English Cocker Spaniel, goldy brown with a sweet white streak on his forehead.

No worries, the pup has been to the vet twice for the diarrhoea and cough, and he's much better. the bumps are the strange thing.

How does the vet test for binine? does it involve any pain, he has been through alot of medication for his cough and diarrhoea already, and just had a jab-am reluctant to subject him to more pain.

Also, please illuminate-what is a puppy mill?
i've kept dogs before, white Spitzs/Samoy (mixed) but they were given by friends, and were very hardy active creatures who lived in the garden. This puppy is from the pet shop. Do pedigree dogs fall ill more easily, esp English Cockers? This puppy stays inside the home and eats alot, watches tv and is quite a baby. The great thing is that he looks healthy.

Is it normal that he hardly barks? He squeals sometimes in manner of communication, but i've rarely heard him bark.

In order to test to see if a lump is malignant or benign, the vet usually draws out a little sample of what's inside with a needle. It would be very unusual for a puppy this age to have cancerous tumours. But whatever the lumps are, they need seeing to.

Although each breed has it's own list of genetic health problems, pedigreed dogs are not more likely to get sick if they come from responsible breeders. However, PET STORE puppies ARE more likely to have genetic defects and illness, merely because they are so badly bred.

I'm glad this little guy got a wonderful home with you, but please never get a puppy from a pet store again. It only encourages puppy mills to keep creating more puppies to sell.

Let us know what the vet says!:)

Here is an article to show you what a puppy mill is, and where pet store puppies come from.:(

Thanks! Puppy is healthy

Thanks Lucky Rescue,

i looked thru the puppy mills website and its horrible! Wasn't aware that such things are happening! I will discourage everyone i know from buying from the pet shops. There are many pet shops springing up now. Perhaps my puppy is from the mill, given his bout after bout of illnesses, but thankfully he is happy and healthy again.

The puppy is all fine now, and his bumps disappeared after some weeks of daily rubs and massages. Whew! He's also well integrated with other dogs, and is strong and feisty, chasing the other big dogs around, and he's learnt to bark as well, probably from hanging out with the big dogs.

Glad to hear your baby is getting healthy!:) Am also glad you won't buy any more puppies at pet stores, and are advising other people not to either. That's great!

Your puppy is definitely from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder, as no good breeder would ever think of putting their puppies in a pet shop.

Do you have pic? Spaniel puppies are among the cutest out there!

In Korea, there basically is no other way to get a dog than from a petshop and while there are puppy mills here too, a lot of the puppies come from personal breeders (who don't know much but at least they are running a puppy mill). The pet store where I bought from also pretended to give medical advice, AND they lied about Casey's age, AND they recommended I feed him just 3 times a day (he was very very tiny and four times was much more appropriate) AND give him water just 3 times a day!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I would like to say one thing about pet store puppies -- the two puppies I've had from pet stores (one is casey, the other was before my family knew better, back in Canada) were incredibly well socialised and totally love/d all creatures, canine, feline or human. When we bought a puppy from a registered breeder, we didn't realize how much effort we should have spent socialising her, and she has ended up liking her owners and just a few others, and hating other dogs. This is NOT an argument in favour of pet stores -- just a comment on the ONE good thing about them. And puppies from breeders, if properly socialised, can be just as sweet and without as many health issues, etc.

This is not a good breeder. Registered does not equal "good". Puppies from good breeders should be home raised, and socialized to everyone and everything.

You were very lucky with your pet store puppies. Because they are pumped out with no regard for health or temperament and are merely considered merchandise, many of them have genetic defects or temperament problems. They are insanely overpriced, and most are way out of standard.
