Bloody stool/Hyperthyroidism
My cat is estimated to be 8 years old. Last month she ruptured an anal gland. I took her to the vet to get antibiotics and have the abscess cleaned and drained. Earlier this week she was finally healed up from the abscess and had her last suture removed. Today I noticed that she had red blood around her anus. The surgery site looked fine, it was clearly from a bowel movement. She was also recently diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. We have yet to move forward with any treatments for it yet. Is this a sign of a worsening problem?

How bad is the hyperT? Does she tend to get constipated? If so, perhaps a diet modification is required. What does your kitty eat right now? |
I can't remember exactly what the vet said, she's basically somewhere in the middle. She really doesn't have any symptoms besides the fact that she loves to eat and doesn't gain any weight. She is given Purina dry food.

Hyperthyroid can cause irritable bowel syndrome which in turn could be responsible for both the blood and anal gland issues. Not sure if your vet thought that was the case for your cat when the hyperthyroid was diagnosed. In addition to the thyroid treatment, you might also consider a diet change to address the bowel problems directly.
