nail clipping
 

I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for clipping my dogs nails. I can hardly even touch her paws and she cries like we are beating her!! She has been this way ever since we got her 4 yrs ago.(we got her when she was 6wks old) The groomer can not get her done either. I was just thinking that someone would have a suggestion other than putting her under her just to clip her nails. They don't seem to bother her when she walks but they bother us when she jumps on us!! Thank you for replies.

the trick is to show them over time that its ok for you to handle her paws.

start by stroking down to them when your petting her, teach her to shake a paw and treat her for it.

once she has progressed a little further and is not so finiky about touching her paws take the clippers and hold them in the same hand and ask her to shake a paw (don't try clipping them at this point) just to get her used to you handleing her paws with the clippers near by.

My guess of why your dog is so afraid is she had her nails clipped onto the quick
at some point in the past. Once she comes to understand that it doesn't hurt, and that she gets great treats for this, she'll be happy to give her paw to you.


Then you'll have to train her not too....seriously

Massage her paws lightly, and give her treats when she will let you see her paws. Start with doing one nail a day, with a big treat after. Just take the tip off them and make sure not to cut into the quick because this will cause pain and more fear.

Yes just cut the very TIP off with a very sharp guilloteine bladed nail cutter.
Do only ONE nail at a time and praise her before and after with love and treats. :p Every day if you do one nail you'll be all done.

You should make a little drawing of her four paws on a piece of paper, put it on the refrigerator and when you cut one nail put an X over it so you know not to to it again.

I have Den-Den's nails clipped at the vets. I worry I might accidently hurt him and then he won't trust me to clip his feet when I'm giving him a haircut. I massage his paws every night when I'm holding him watching TV. He likes it.

Bentley is very sensitive about who touches his paws and when. It is usualy the front paws that are the problem, not the back ones. It all takes patience and time, and hopefully you'll get it!

Jordie is ok with his nails as the groomer does it often enough and if needed Marty ( my husband ) will do them, Jordie will let him no problems.

Blaze is bad.. :( He hates his feet touched and I did rub them and kiss them :) alot as a baby hoping nails would be no problem, was I wrong. The only way to cut his is one at a time and sometimes you do forget where you left off.

It is so good that we did it :D We have have Blazes's paw prints on the fridge how cute thanks again.

over time, Chocolate's gotten highly sensitive of his nails being clipped.. and UNFORTUNATELY, Honey's decided to learn this behaviour from watching him... :mad:

so. now i clip a few nails at a time when they're sleeping :D :D


my LATEST attempt has been this: my bf picks up the dawg and holds it as tho a child is sitting on his lap, but he's practically lying w the dog on the sofa, creating a very laid back environment. :p i quickly come along, and clip a few, praise & kiss, and con't the process.


i can't recall who we tried it on first, but it worked like a charm! i believe the fact that the dogs trust and cherish my bf, plays a HUGE part into the joined nail clipping session. :p

I do what Waggie does, cut their nails when they are sleeping. If they wake up, you just pretend that you are patting them and they go back to sleep.
