Does your dog like or dislike trips to the veterinarian?

We have shared our lives with a number of dogs now, and about eighty percent of them enjoyed trips to the vet. But the twenty percent who did not enjoy it had very strong opinions on the matter, to the extent that we dreaded routine visits.

Sola does not mind visiting the vet, but she still manages to get us in to serious trouble every time we go.

How are your dogs at the vet?

I don't have dogs, I have cats.

Of the 5, two (Maks & Kiska) are pretty cooperative. They protest, but only by meowing and trying to get into their carrier, however the vet has no trouble examining them.

Czarina is usually too scared to protest so she is actually THE most cooperative, and doesn't let out a peep during her examination.

Oksana, complains the entire time through the examination. Meorwling and moving.

Vlad is a whole different case. I have to give him half a Xanax before taking him in because he gets downright scary. He is so terrified, he will move to the back of the carrier, hiss, growl, and scream bloody murder. It was during one of those fits, where they had to use "the gloves" to handle him, that the vet told me we needed to give him something before the exams, because she could not so much as even touch him. It's so bad, when I arrive with him and the vet techs see it's him, I can hear them in the back "Hey guys, heads up, Vlad's here." :o It's odd though because he's the only one of my gang who when he sees the carrier he happily walks in because he knows we are going somewhere.

I think for mine, it is something between love and hate, perhaps I should say they "tolerate" going. Mac never had issues until the day he needed blood drawn from a vein in his neck. Since then, he will cry/whine a bit, but there are so many good smells that he settles quickly. Cassidy does well. She trembles a bit when we get to the office, but she is very social. Now my sweet little Tipper was my trooper. She would cower and shake at the vets, but when she got so sick, vets became her lifeline. She would sit very dignified on my lap showing her Scottie spirit and reserve. She saw so many specialists during her final months and would trot back for her procedures with her little tail high and her head raised. This little sick girl truly showed what the "Diehard" nickname meant.

Julia hates the trip but at 5 lbs - she really has not much choice:laughing:. My rott Ben was very tolerant even though it was always for cancer treatments and operations - which was not pleasent for him. He always greeted them well and never made of fuss - bless his big beautiful heart. Luv ya Ben.:rip:

Poor little five pounder! I guess she has to play along! :)

Bailey_ April 9th, 2009 11:51 AM

We have a great vet who is always really excited and happy when he see's Bailey, which makes her excited and happy. She has been to the vet for a pretty serious condition, had x-rays done, etc - but it didn't seem to deter her from liking the clinic.

I also take her there to pick up her food though, so she often goes in and out for quick trips every few weeks. That probably has helped.

She has no choice as she is a pocket pooch. She can kick a scream all she wants but lucky for me ...I win!:D

Then I ask myself...if this was a big dog would I still tolerate this bad behaviour...answer is No. Amazing that I have fallen into the category of small dog denial of structure..My Bad!:o

Melinda April 9th, 2009 12:04 PM

Brina pulls me into the vet office, rushes up to the counter and surfs it looking for the girls behind it, if they aren't there she barks till they appear, then she proceeds to prance around the room meeting and greeting all the owners and pets and on her way will hop up onto the scales and sit, whether they are ready for her weight or not *L* once we go into the little examination room she's nervous till the vet comes in, then she bowls him over and cleans his ears.

Rottielover April 10th, 2009 07:30 AM

As a puppy I always brought harley in to be weighed and socialized. Lucky for me I did because when he was there every 2 weeks it made the trip easy. Even though he has gone for many tests, operations, stitches and such, he still looks forward to the vet visit.

Roxy is a little more stressed, but I have not had her long enough to really socialize her there much except for a biopsy, needles, x ray, but she loves my vet just the same vet = more food in her eyes, LOL

ddianam April 20th, 2009 12:30 PM

My 10 month old Yorkie, Oscar, hates the vet. He clings to me and climbs on my shoulder once we enter the examination room...but this could just be because he is still young and has to get use to it!

TacoGrl April 20th, 2009 03:01 PM

Cats here too :)

My Jaeger and Mooki were great at the vet:)

Messina is an attention whore when she goes...only prob is when there is another kitty there not having much fun, she wants to be near them and she will start fussing until she sees the other kitty...I have been known to put her cage down in front of the kitty and soon the kitty shuts up and relaxes...Messina is such a good little momma. :lovestruck:

Seth...hmmm...my boy Seth. It's not so much the vet he doesn't like, it's being put into the carrier and being touched by me and the vet. He is another one who is scared to the point of just sitting there not moving, which is great to get all the things done that need to be done, but I feel for him

All are quiet in the truck...Jaeger used to sit on my shoulders while I was driving...seems like forever ago now.

TeriM April 20th, 2009 06:44 PM

I voted hate but I think that is to strong for my guys.

They like the people but are strongly suspicious of them as well. My vet is actually one of my clients and when she was younger Lucy used to go there all the time but she always crawled under the desk to be right next to me just in case some evil person wanted to clean her ears or cut her claws .

Riley is okay but the chaos of the vet hospital stresses him out. He gets some "personal space" indoors issues and can be defensive with other loose dogs in the clinic although he rarely has any issues outdoors.

The are actually very tolerant though and will basically let the vet or staff do anything to them.I give Lucy cartrophen shots at home and I don't even need anyone to hold her. She just sits and wags her tail and waits for the cookie .

The cats hate the vet. Desi is always terrified and basically just freezes so they can do anything to her. Fred actually was a kitten adopted from the clinic but he also hates it there and the few times he has stayed there for some tests he will cower in his litter box . That also means he usually stinks of urine when he comes home and needs a bath.

muggsmom April 20th, 2009 07:22 PM

Muggs absolutely loves the vets. The only problem is his aggression, we have to check that no dogs are in the lobby, then rush him to an exam room, same on the way out. One time we had stopped in to get something at our old vets, hubby ran in and I stayed in the car with Muggs. He carried on so much that I had to take him in to say HI, then he was fine. It always amazes me, considering a lot of his visits haven't been pleasant....porcupine quills, eye surgery etc.

Etown_Chick April 20th, 2009 08:30 PM

Scruffy loves everyone and everything, including the vet, the ladies at the front, the other clients, their pets, the floor, the chairs, the magazines, everything as long as no one tries to look down his ears for any reason!

clm April 20th, 2009 08:41 PM

All of our dogs have loved the vet with the exception of our first dog, although he too did before he got that cortizone shot in the leg by a vet we've never been back to.

I've only ever had one cat that didn't mind the vet, and that was our big indoor/outdoor stray Max. He was calm, cool and collected.
Every other cat I've had turns into a ball of nerves going.

I had three dogs in the USA. One blue heeler one golden and one BEAUTIFUL mutt ^^. The mutt (cassi) LOVED the vet...the golden (guen) tolerated it and the blue heeler (dinah) would have to go muzzled and on a tight leash because she would lunge at every other animal in the clinic...But then once we were in the private office she would be fine....till the ebil woman in white came out with the gloves. THEN it was burrow into my belly to get away from that gloved finger (she needed to stop eating those damn dead animals she would find on the mountain >.< kept getting worms or diarrhea one year)

Bearsmom April 22nd, 2009 03:41 PM

Molly and Bear LOVE the ride in the truck 'till we get about 50 feet from the vet's parking lot, then the both try to make themselves reeeeallllly teeeny tinnnnnny in the back so that perhaps I can't see them (in their minds). Once they surrender themselves to the fact that they are indeed going in no matter what, they walk as slooooowly as possible to the door.

Once inside, they're ok till we get in the exam room. Once in there they both stand with their snouts to the door just waiting till we can leave. Bear is also known to have "defensive farts" once the vet gets near him, which is LOVELY in a small exam room. Molly is nervous but with a lot of reassurance, she seems to be okay, just grumbly.

Once we're outta the exam room, they rocket through the lobby. I'm sure the vet's receptionist thinks we're skipping out on the bill.

Well, now that I finally have a dog, I can say that the two times she has been since I got her she has thoroughly enjoyed it, and adores our vet. (Maybe that is because he gives her treats!)

Personally, I think if you keep down on the bad experiences, dog probably wont develop a hate for it. Just give them lots of treats and let everybody pet them (that is what I read to do anyway)

Kahne9Lover April 22nd, 2009 08:33 PM

My two LOVE the office girls!

Longblades April 23rd, 2009 07:54 AM

Current pup loves going anywhere in the car and anywhere there are people. Last girl, though, dreaded the Vets. No wonder, after being in for three days on IV to fight parvo at 6 months old. She did handle better with the female Vets and Vet Techs so I always specified, not HIM. Nicely of course and they understood, though most clients apparently asked FOR the male Vet.

Two of the cats are fine but our former feral is terrified to the point of immobility, meaning she can at least be handled.

hunnybunny April 23rd, 2009 04:48 PM

My yogi is fine on the way there and in the waiting room, but when its our turn he digs his heels in and sits down and won,t move -bless him, its like trying to move a block of concrete, i have to push him along the floor into the exam room, once in there he always goes and sits on the floor scales, think he feels safe there[least i can get his weight done easily:laughing:]
Every time he goes he usually has to have something done, so can,t blame him really:pawprint:

im_nomad April 25th, 2009 08:49 PM

Molly loves the vet until she has to get up on the table and get anything done. She's like "hey ! new people! dogs! kitties!!! new smells ! woohoooo!!!!....wait a minute....." lol She's pretty much the same way when she goes for a visit at the kennel. Happy to go off with just about anyone.

She is around 15 pounds and it takes two people to hold her when she has to get shots etc. She's pretty strong for her size and pretty stubborn. After all is done and she returns to the waiting room she's ready to go, unless of course a new dog or person comes along, then it's "woohoo!!!" all over again.

She had the whole place rolling one of the last times I was there. She is a dancing doggie when petted on a certain part of her back and starts jigging her back legs like Michael Flatley for all she's worth. The more excited she gets, the more she does it, and even does it on her own by backing up under a crossed leg etc. While we waited she started her routine under my foot and kept the entire waiting room and staff entertained as she riverdanced

She's such a little weirdo and I love her for it. :)

CearaQC April 26th, 2009 05:13 AM

My dogs don't seem to care at all, until they have to get on that dreaded table. They don't like the table because it's probably too high from their point of view. And while on the table they wag their tail and Sheeba licked the vet in the face but he didn't mind that because he owns a chocolate lab, which is always there and likes to visit the other animals. My girls like to greet everyone they see at the vet and don't understand why another animal would growl at them, like the kitties in carriers. But they wag their tails in greeting and whine if they don't get to see everyone.

I think Sheeba hates the dreaded thermometer more than anything. The look on her face is priceless.

Sandy is a good girl at the vet. When we first got her and she had all those health problems, the vet had to do blood work to diagnose. At first he just clipped a nail quick to get a couple drops of blood. Sandy didn't make a peep or even flinch. And she still lets me clip her claws with no fuss, even after going through the pain of having the quick cut on purpose like that. Another time the vet wanted to draw blood from her leg with a needle. We didn't even have to hold her down and I assisted by putting thumb pressure on the place he pointed at. Another time Sandy had to have a second blood test but the regular vet didn't draw the blood and it was some lady. She proceeded to put her arms around Sandy and really hold her down hard while a tech drew the blood and I told her all that force was really unnecessary but she glared at me and said I didn't know what I was talking about. :wall: I told her that's my dog and I know how she will behave and that she was scaring Sandy. Sandy looked at me like "HELP ME!" I was real close to calling that woman a bitch to her face but it was over quick enough. Never seen the same woman at the vet's ever again, thankfully. If I ever do, I will demand that she not touch my animals at all and only let the male vet or one of the nice techs do it. She is not a nice lady at all and shouldn't be messing with dogs. She always said she liked working with farm animals better and she's probably more suited to having her arm up a cow's rear.
