OMG Theres a hole in her side!!

Before you say anything I have already called the emergency vet and they said it is not life threatening and can wait until tomorrow morning. But I'm still freaking out.

I'm watching my boyfriend's dog for thanksgiving. Hes out of town, should be home in a couple hours. I finally got the dogs inside from being outside for 2 hours and I noticed what looked like a scratch on his dog, I check it out and it is a hole in her side, the flappy skin by the waist. Its not bleeding but it is a hole! I know its going to need to be stitched and she needs to see a vet. Is there anything I could put on this to stop infection until a vet can see her? The lady at the er vet said they couldn't give me advice over the phone but put on it whatever you would if I had the same wound. I put some antibiotic ointment on it but its a hole! and that makes it rather difficult to put anything on it. So I put it on this nonstick bandage thingy and used wrap stuff to hold it in place on the wound. Is this good? Should I even be covering it? it always happens on holidays!!! Any help would be great

So this hole is in the flappy skin between the hind leg and the belly? Does it go all the way through? If so, is it a puncture or a tear? Is there also a wound on the belly?

Karu'sMama November 26th, 2009 07:12 PM

Its a puncture, or looks like it. But there is a slight scratch mark on the right side of the wound. There is no other marks on her, nothing on her belly at all. Its a little higher up that what I think u are thinking. You can see the meat behind the skin.

hazelrunpack November 26th, 2009 07:18 PM

So sort of up in the crook formed by the thigh and the body wall?

If it doesn't look like it's punctured anything vital, then it should be okay to wait. Is the puncture very big around?

We had to wait overnight for a barbed-wire gash repair--it was pretty large and it was hard for us to clean. We didn't bother to wrap it, but as I remember, we needed a cone because Gauge wanted to lick it. :o Next day they did a little trimming to clean up the wound, then stitched and it healed beautifully.

Is she going after it at all?

Karu'sMama November 26th, 2009 07:40 PM

Yes that's exactly where it is. Its wrapped for now but I think i'll take it off when he gets here. I think we might still end up at the e-vet, this is sorta his baby and hes worried. But shes not bothering with it at all, I don't think she realizes shes hurt. Hes never gonna let me dogsit again.

You know the saying Karu'sMama...s*** happens. He'll forgive you. :o Might help if you can figure out how she did it--maybe there's some way to help fix the yard so it doesn't happen again.

Meanwhile, :goodvibes: for a quick and complete recovery for Daddy's little girl.

I hope she is okay .....please keep us updated. :fingerscr :goodvibes:

He brought her to the e-vet last nigth. they trimmed it and closed it with glue and shes on antibiotics. They think it looks like it was caught on a fence or she ran up against a nail on a fence. But I checked my whole back yard 4 times and bf did too and there is nothing we could find. I did find a stick in the bf's house though that had a wedged end like it had been cut and it appeared to have had something on it, not water, but it was marked like it had something on it . I'm thinking that could have been it and I didn't realize when I picked her up. But the vet said it was unlikely. We probably will never know. Shes moping around cause she can't go play but she'll be ok.

:goodvibes: for a quick recovery!

It can be pretty hard to figure out what they've hurt themselves on, especially if you have a large yard. You may see something you've missed later, but chances are you're not ever going to figure out what caused the damage

Did your bf forgive you? :o

I am glad all is well now, :goodvibes: for a speedy recovery.

Glad to hear that she's okay. :thumbs up

Hope she heals quickly so she can get back to playing with her buddy. :fingerscr

And, we'd love to see pics of them as well. :goodvibes:

There is a dog in our neighbourhood that looks like Karu and he is a Rhodesian Ridgeback cross.
