Problems with a scardy cat dog

Hi I'm new to this so forgive me if I mess up.
I have a 15 month old rescued English Mastiff dog named Barker he is the lite of our lives ( as well as our 6 cats ofcourse).
He has over the last 6-8 weeks developed a new strange fear of people loud nioses and cars.I know what you are all thinking because we have palyed all the scenarios over already BUT
no one has hurt him
not changes to our household no changes in health or diet,
no changes to his routeen,
no new people in our home,
he was rescued at 10 weeks old and has shown just the oposite behaviour untill a few weeks ago he never met a stranger everyone was his friend
we did the whole 100 people/100 dogs meat and greet in the first 6 months thing
he has gone thru two lots of puppy training already with flying colours ( top of his clas in both thank you -I'm very proud!)
We walk him in petsmart almost every week end just for socialisation and he plays most weekend in the dog park where he loves every dog and swims till he is dragged away.
Our yard is larg fenced and gated with little chance of us not seeing anyone hanging over the fence tormenting him.( he is an inside dog and in during the day when we are at work three days a week)
even people he once tried to get in the laps of he will now hide his tale and cower behind us.
We are at a loss we have a vets appointmant anyway next saturday for booster shots so we will have his temp taken blood work drawn in case he is ill ( althought no signs of such)
OK does any one have any ideas at all we are desparate he almost dislocated my fingers pulling up out of the door to get out of Petsmart on Saturday he was so desparate to get away from it all and he loves the place two months ago.
He never barks or gruffs or is in any way aggressive he is just plain scared and it beaks my heart. At home alone with us he is normal unless someone comes in then he hides again.
THANKS.

It's a good thing you're bringing him to the vet because that's all I can think of. It may be an health issue and not a behavior issue.

Sometimes when a dog is sick or has a condition , they will become aggressive or scared.

Good luck at the vet , please keep us posted. :fingerscr

A vet check is a good idea, just to rule out any physical cause. But dogs also go through phases where they are just naturally more cautious and sensitive, as well. Might not be a bad idea to just ease off on the socialization for a while. Don't coddle him of offer him sympathy, just make his trips out a little less frequent and see if it makes a difference. If it is just a phase, in a few weeks he should be looking forward to those Petsmart visits again.
