Birdie people - I need your help..

.. to identify these birdies. :o "Cause besides the normal robins, chickadees, Mourning Doves, starlings, grackles, etc. I have no idea.
These little ones have been taking to hanging around here the last couple of weeks. There is a flock of around 100 of them. The closest I can get is White breasted Nuthatch? Very neat little fellas to watch. Love their song. Very soft and sweet.
Sorry about the quality of the pics. My camera sucks sometimes.

I have no idea...
But though I would say.... BRRRRRRR.....
Dear Dog I love Florida! :D

:p It actually isn't that bad today. Only -9 C. And it's snowing, again. But it's a soft snow so it shouldn't be too bad.
Florida may be great but I would not be able to handle the heat in the summer months. There are days here when I have to head for cover.
Just gotta say I will keep my 19 acres and the peace and quiet. :thumbs up

Are they a little bigger than chickadees, 14+? In the one picture they look a bit like goldfinches but in the other they look more like snow buntings or longspurs  If they're significantly bigger than chickadees (like more than a few cms longer) then they'd be something else....

Looks too big to be a nuthatch. Perhaps they're Snow Buntings?

babymomma January 19th, 2009 11:45 AM

OMG! Do they look like MINI hawks or something? Same shape head? And coloration? I have been trying to figure out what kind of birds have been hanging around my feeder since october! lol

If you go about half way down the page there is a pic of a snow bunting.

Thanks for that link L4H. I think they may well be snow buntings. If so, they are a ways away from home.
Hazel - they are about half again the size of a chickadee. Very neat to watch. The white on them is almost blinding. Very pretty. :cloud9:
I noticed on the drive downtown this morning that there is another flock about a country block away too. It is also quite large.
Thanks for the help ladies.

Def. snow buntings. They hang out in flocks like that, very often near the edges of roads in rural/agricultural areas. I see them all the time near my place. Very cool, I almost never spot them until they fly off. :thumbs up

ETA: you won't see nuthatches in flocks nor will you often see them on the ground. They're not as big either, if memory serves me correctly.

We get snow buntings here, too--I love the flash of white as they flush from the side of the road.
