Cruelty charge filed after dog is dragged

Police arrested a man on suspicion of animal cruelty Sunday after he and his wife found their runaway dog in a west Phoenix neighborhood, then tied the animal by its neck to the back of a pickup truck and dragged it nearly a mile.

Herminio Velasquez, 32, told officers he tied the 2-year-old female chow to the truck because he didn't want to place the dog inside the pickup and risk getting his clothes dirty before attending church, investigators said. Witnesses called 911 about 4:30 p.m. after spotting the dog trying to keep up with the truck near Glendale and 43rd avenues, Phoenix police Sgt. Jantra Palmer said.

Velasquez told investigators that he believed the dog was running behind the pickup while his wife drove about 10 mph. At one point, Velasquez could not see the chow at the end of the rope and realized it was being dragged, prompting him to get out of the truck and walk the dog home, Palmer said. A trail of blood spanning about 500 yards was spotted along the path where the animal was dragged, she said.

The chow's pads were ripped from its paws and most of the dog's nails were shattered, Arizona Humane Society spokeswoman Kim Noetzel said. Veterinarians were treating the dog late Sunday, and Noetzel said she believed it would survive.

The Humane Society will take custody of the dog pending a disposition of the case in court, Noetzel said.

Velasquez was booked into a Maricopa County jail on one count of felony animal cruelty. Authorities also planned to arrest his wife, who went to church with the couple's children and remained there Sunday evening, Palmer said.

On tv today this man said he wants his dog back, what in the f*** is wrong with people.....He should be dragged......An eye for an eye..

glasslass August 3rd, 2004 04:30 PM

With that kind of owner, no wonder the dog ran away! He should never get him back!

melanie August 3rd, 2004 04:36 PM

and shockingly if he gets that dog back it is a reflection of that society. ha and it makes me laugh that they go to church, why bother they are the worst type of sinners alive and if there is a hell will definatly burn there, cruel good for nothings that should be shot between the eyes. and shockingly they have kids, why do welfare let the kids stay, their parents have openly displayed the most disgusting cruelty, if they do that to a dog just imagine what they would do to a kid. shoot the *******s i say

Cactus Flower August 3rd, 2004 04:54 PM

It is very hard to share the planet with people like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonder how he treats his kids???

heidiho August 3rd, 2004 05:02 PM

On tv last night the humane society said they will fight it all the way and our sheriff out here is pretty harsh on animal cruelty,he will never see that dog again,i say shoot them also.or make the punishment the same as the crime, drag his ass ont his 110 degree pavement, you should of seen the blood they showed on the news, this dog will have hundreds of people wanting to adopt him..I would just die if i saw something like that going down the road, what are peple thinking and why do they get pets??? F***** PIECES OF S***

mastifflover August 3rd, 2004 05:21 PM

Someone might actually do something if it was kids. Bast*** should be dragged behind a truck to see if he can keep up. Personally I think these ass**** need to be made an example of not slapped on the wrists and told don't do that again. Makes my blood boil when I hear this stuff.

Donna Marie August 3rd, 2004 05:28 PM

If they give that dog back  .....someone needs to pay for what has happened to her. You don't love a dog and then drag it in the street. Says he "didn't want to get his church clothes dirty"???? THEN he noticed it not at the end of the rope and "walked the dog home"???? WTF???? In that heat a dog, or any other animal, should be kept cool....anyone who "loves" their animal should know this first and foremost. I smell BS. He needs to be tied to the end of a rope and made run behind the truck.

heidiho August 3rd, 2004 05:58 PM

I know, the dog was on tv to,there resiliance is amazing, all four feet were wrapped in bandages,i just cannot imagine how painful that must of been,i fully believe the crime should fit the punishment,i mean his pads on paws were ripped off, that is insane. Will see if they have any updates tonight on tv.

What The ****

Its not normal for people to be this stupid......so what is it thats in the water that makes these people brain dead. Would you drag your 3 year old child behind a car .......NO.....so why do it to your animal.......Would you leave your 3 year child in the car on a hot summer day while you went and had lunch.......NO.......So why do it to your animal....Lets all ask ourselves this question.........If we wouldn't do it to our young child.....why in the hell would we do it to our animals. This man needs to be locked up and the key needs to be thrown into the ocean.

heidiho August 4th, 2004 04:35 PM

Jen Jen said it all,i think people dont believe animals feel anything and are just there,i really hope he gets jailtime.

melanie August 4th, 2004 04:59 PM
