I think my dog is in depression
I have a happy go lucky 1 yr old boxer. She has not met a person or other dog that she does not love. She loves to play with other dogs and go on her daily jogs. Recently, I had to temporarily move out (about 2 weeks) to do rennovations to my house. My boxer (Lucca) and I stayed with a buddy who also has a 1yr old boxer. Because I work during the day and my friend works at night, Lucca hardly ever had to go in her kennel. Lucca and my friends boxer seemed to become very close and play together, run in the backyard and nap side by side.
Now I have been home for 2 days and my happy go lucky boxer is a zombie. I tried to take her on a run (which she absolutely loves to do) and I was basically dragging her. Normally the first half mile she is sooooo excited trying to run ahead of me. We didn't even make it a quarter mile. She mopes around the house, won't chase a ball or even play when I get home from work. She is however eating and drinking water which is a good thing. At first I thought she got into something that made her sick, but now I think she is just depressed. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |
If your friend doesn't live to far from you arrange play dates for the dogs. Or you can have sleep overs.

Have you taken her to the vet? We always check out changes in behavior--and usually there is something physical underlying it. The fact that she didn't want to go on a run, something she normally loves to do, makes me wonder if possibly she hurt herself at some point during your time at your friend's house.
If she checks out physically, then I think the idea of arranging play dates is great! If she's just missing her friend, she'll soon realize that the relationship isn't over, and perk back up. :D |
think my dog
Have you considered getting your dog a friend, a shelter or rescue dog about the same age and size? Since dogs are pack animals this might be something to check into.

If she injured/bruised herself playing then I would watch her closely for a day or so, if she does not perk up then a vet visit is next step. Perhaps she is missing her new found friend. pbp

Based on the assumption that everything checks out with her healthwise. I think for sure she is missing her playmate. Two of ours dogs are really close, they are the two youngest and on weekends my daughter takes Iggy with her when she stays at her boyfriends :yuck: For the first few months, Rebel would just go out on the back deck and look around aimlessly and be generally mopey. Now he knows he is coming back so is not so bad. If play dates can be arranged, that would be great, even better adopt a permanent playmate.

Lucca just misses her buddy that's all. :dog:
