Percy's at the vet
Percy hasn't been himself the last few days (although he never stopped eating, which was for some idiotic reason, reassuring :wall:). He had a small bite on his head, healing well, nothing else that I could see.
Then yesterday he started limping, to the point where he had problems walking. I had already decided to bring him to the vet this morning and when I went to lift him up a huge abcess on the back of his front leg (I found out later) literally exploded. Pus everywhere. Rushed to the vet; he is still there. If you think I don't feel like the most negligent catmother on the planet, you would be wrong. The infection had gone into the muscle so they had to trim a small area away, flush out the entire wound, then close with sub-cutaneous stitches as well as cutaneous. In addition, there were 2 other bites that needed attention (but no stitches) and he had to be declawed on one 'toe' because the claw had been ripped out in such a way that the whole area was damaged. My poor boy! He will be coming home tonight, stuffed with painkillers, and will have the bathroom and a heating pad to himself. One positive: he tested negative for FiV, but will have to be re-tested in three months. I couldn't feel worse or more useless. To think he had been quietly suffering all that time while I merrily bowled along. A wake-up call for sure. |
Badger don't beat yourself up over this. This could happen to anyone. You of all people along with those other wonderful cat people are amazing. I don't know how you do it.
It is hard to control everything Badger. Bottom line is your cat is ok and everything will work out. Don't worry and do NOT blame yourself. Luv ya lots Badger!:grouphug: |
Badger,I am trying to remember who Percy is,not that it matters..
Don't forget,if Percy was not with you, then what do you think would have happened? Like BenMax says, you are one of those people on this Forum I admire greatly, don't blame yourself, please:grouphug: |

How could I resist?

Aw Badger :grouphug:, cats are so gosh darn good at hiding pain, how were you to know? You are a great cat mom who saves the lives of a lot sweet souls that other humans have thrown away like trash.
|
Badger, you are a great mom, and he will be okay! You got him to the vet and they were able to treat him. You couldn't know he was worse than you thought, because as you said, he was eating. I'd have thought he was okay too, since I've always heard as long as they are eating they are okay.
I'm glad he tested negative, and I'm sure he will test negative in a few months too. Now all you need to do is just get him well and spoil him rotten. |
I agree ......we all know how good cats are at hiding their pain. It's definitely not your fault at all. :grouphug:
The main thing is you got him the care he needed and I hope he has a speedy recovery. :fingerscr :goodvibes: |
Percy is a good looking cat.i wouldn't be to hard on yourself as we all miss things from time to time and if they are not showing pain it can make it easier to miss something.
|
I'm with the others, thank goodness he is with you! I see nothing but a wonderful caregiver looking after a beautiful cat. He's getting the care he needs and he's going to be fine, that's what matters. Love the picture too. :D

How is Percy doing since he has come home? :fingerscr :goodvibes:

He's back! The affected leg is completely shaved, no bandage on the stitches, but his foot is wrapped for the next three days. I took off the collar, so far so good, but may have to put it on again when there's no-one to watch him. Walking on his little 'boot' gives him kind of a funny gait lol.
The new guy, Eddie, was extremely aggressive the minute I got Percy out of the crate, so he gets to cool his heels in the bathroom. It's a possibility that Eddie and he got into a scrap last week while I was absent and Percy came away with the worst of it; they truly dislike each other. So from now on, however difficult the logistics, they will be separated. Wot a day, nothing accomplished, except getting Percy back to normal. You can imagine the bill. If three quarters of the world's population can survive on rice and beans, why can't I? :cat: |
Aww badger, don't you dare blame yourself! How can you? You can't be with these guys 24/7. Cats are masters of not showing pain. How were you to know? As soon as you knew something was off you got him where he needed to be. He will be good! :thumbs up
You should write a book on your adventures. I bet it would be a best seller!! |

LOL .....we prefer our beans with weiners and our rice with leftovers. :D I hope Percy has a speedy recovery. :fingerscr :goodvibes: |
Speedy recovery for Percy :goodvibes:
|
Badger,thank's for the pic,exactly what I wanted;)
It must have been one heck of a fight between Eddie and Percy, then again,I know first hand how much damage cat-bites can do:yell: You have a tough time ahead keeping those two separated, but you are kind of an expert:cat::grouphug: |
