Pet First Aid; Irony, help

So, I took a pet first aid class today and took Sasha with me. This was held in a "puppy day care/pet store", Sasha and one other dog we were there from 9am -3:30pm, my OCD doggie played ran and played some more. When I got her home she was limping I took a look at her rear legs and paws..the leather on her large pads was worn off!!! She just does not know when to stop. I have put some salve and gauze and bandaged them for now but what next?

I called the instructor and told her about this and she is going to talk to the owner of the daycare to see if this has happened before to any other dogs who attend this daycare. pbp

What kind of flooring is there in the areas Sasha was playing?

:grouphug: for Sasha & her sore paws

Make sure the pads are kept clean so there's no infection :goodvibes: speedy healing

they had those squares that fit together, not sure if they are rubber or some sort of soft plastic, they are coloered, red and black and fit together like bricks but soft.

Those are generally quite easy on the feet.

Sasha just does not know when to stop, she was playing with a ball and toys that were being thrown so she did a lot of stop and go type of work. Do you know how long it takes for this to heal? The leather is totally worn off on both pads.

You should also try to trim the fur around her pads so the fur is not touching the wound area & potentially causing irritation. As for how long probably a couple of days to a week.

Thanks Growler for the advise, I wrapped Sasha's paws overnight and will take them off soon, question should I re-wrap them with some salve again or leve them to air healing?

She is walking better with the gauze and bandage, without she was trying to walk on her toes. Poor baby. It looks very uncomfortable for her.

hi patti..

IMO I would re-warp her paws with some salve. this way you know they are covered and less chance of infection or licking..

Hi Breeze, I was thinking the same thing too, I have never had to deal with a pad injury before so not too sure about the wrap or not.

when we had Nakita, she would run on pavement, her paws would end up getting scraped and one time her whole pad came off like a calus that falls off.
we had to keep her from walking on it so we wrapped it up with some salve, we did this for about 3 days ( checking it every day) by the 4 day I left the wrap off but put the salve on it for about 2 more days to condition the pad..

it took about a week before she was allowed to run on it again..

Like Breeze says go ahead & re wrap with salve, you should check the bandage about every 12 hours make sure it's not weeping or has a strange odour and you can change it either every day or every two days.

If her foot looks like it is swelling abit you can rub in some rubbing alcohol to the top & sides of her foot if it contacts the pad that's okay but it might sting a bit, then when you re wrap her foot put a cotton ball between her toes it will help to reduce swelling. :)

When it's no longer raw and the skin is healing you can leave the bandage off unless she starts licking excessively.

Growler and Breeze gave good advice and I have no more to offer but just wanted to give some hugs for Sasha :grouphug: and hope she heals quickly. :fingerscr :goodvibes:

Thank you Breeze, Growler and Rainbow your help with this. I am happy to say that my injury prone labbie is on the road to recovery. I kept bandages on her feet (replacing twice a day) since Sunday, when I took them off this morning she is walking on the whole foot again, it looks like they are healing nicely. I am so glad that I have a fast healer since she can get herself into TROUBLE :wall: so easy:frustrated:. So for the next few days it will be short walks no running and NO chasing toys.

:goodvibes: for continued healing and no reinjury!

Shasha, you silly! What were you thinking?!
