Nervous Peeier
 

Rookey owner of a 13 month old female cocker. Awesome dog and a great addition to the family save for the fact that she is a nervous peeier in the house. Tonight, for example, I got out of my chair and said "Hi Sally" going toward her a bit and down she went for a tinkle. She sleeps in our room at night and after being trained has never had an accident, gets up in the morning and goes out and does her business. I don't want to get frustrated with her but it is beginning. Any thouhgts on a course of action? She was born in July and we got her from the kennel in October. I apologize in advance if this is 'beating a dead horse' for some but again a rookey here.

Does she do the same if you stay at a distance, crouch down, and call her to you? That is a very submissive action she is doing. I'm even wondering if it would help if you avoided eye contact??

I would start ignoring her and let her come to you for affection and when she does then praise her. Let her find her way a little and develop some confidence. Keep up with her walks and regular training.

That's submissive peeing, not nervous peeing. You need to give her another way to please you, so she feels like she's earning her place in the pack. Anytime you arrive home or want to give her affection make minimal eye contact and tell her to "sit" or "down". Make her work for the things she gets, and only give affection after she has done something to earn it. If she pees, ignore the behaviour - be sure to give no reinforcement for it whatsoever. She needs to know that this behaviour does not make you happy! Good luck :)
