Trillium Rhizomes

I bought some trillium rhizomes yesterday from a wildflower org. while I was at Canada Blooms yesterday and intend to plant them (guerilla gardening style - surreptiously) in a forested area of a nearby park. I have no experience with trilliums - has anyone planted/ tended them ?

Trilliums like moist, loamy soil and do well in areas that remain moist, have a good amount of leaf compost and shade with minor sunshine. We had tons of them on the back of our property in Niagara, just on the foot of the 100 acre woods behind us.

Thanks I'll buy some manure and bring it with me to dig into the soil. Given our crazy weather, can I plant in April or should I wait until May 2-4? Would a natural fish fertilizer work best or bonemeal?

Trilliums are somewhat delicate... I would go with compost that you can buy at the garden center, that way it is more balanced. Or get the 3-in-1 which is compost, manure and fertilizer.. it's slightly less potent so easier on delicate transplanters.

Sorry, forgot about the last question. I would wait until temps hold above zero as ground frost will give them a bad time unless you can find some warm leaves to pack around them prior to that date.. straw would work as well which is what the strawberry guys use or a bag of hay which you can get at a pet supply store for feeding rabbits, etc..

Thanks to you both - I guess they'll hang out in my refridgerator for a little while then! I'll get started on my sunflowers until then - guerilla gardening - what a blast !
